Brewer High School

BREWER – The Brewer High School Class of 1973 will hold its 30th reunion Aug. 9 in Bangor. The location, cost and details have been mailed to nearly 300 members of the class.

Fairmount School

BANGOR – Paul Butler, a teacher and coach at the James F. Doughty School, was named principal of Fairmount Elementary School by the Bangor School Committee last week.

Butler is enrolled in the master’s in leadership program at the University of Maine and had taught at the Doughty School for the past seven years. He is a 1993 graduate of Colby College in Waterville and a Bangor High School graduate.

Maine School of Science and Mathematics

BANGOR – The Maine School of Science and Mathematics has openings for its weeklong summer camp programs for boys. The camp for pupils in grades five to seven is July 20-27. The camp for boys in grades seven to nine is July 27-Aug. 2.

Each camp centers on science, mathematics and computer classes. Recreation programs include swimming, basketball, soccer, arts and crafts, chess and martial arts. Evening programs include a game show, physics night, career night and a pool party.

Joshua Hunnefeld, 14, of Bangor, a John Bapst Memorial High School student, has attended the summer camp for three years. He said the camp has helped his understanding of chemistry and physics.

“My favorite activity,” he said, “was building a robot using Legos. I also liked Lift Off where we made and shot a rocket.”

Wassookeag School

BANGOR – Wassookeag School, located at Bangor Theological Seminary, will hold an informational meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, at the Edythe L. Dyer Community Library in Hampden. The school is accepting applications for the upcoming academic year for pupils in grades one through eight.

This year at Wassookeag School, Molly Holmberg, a professional mapmaker, taught the basics of mapmaking and geography. Children made a map book of the seminary.

A trip to Fogg Farm provided hands-on learning about nature. A river-keepers trip included a canoe ride on the Penobscot River and a wealth of information about Bangor’s waterway.

Pupils also made a trip to Yarmouth to the map publisher DeLorme, which has a 41-foot-diameter moving 3-D model of the earth.

During the unit on China, pupils learned calligraphy, held a dinner at the Oriental Jade restaurant in Bangor and learned tai chi.

Assumption College

WORCESTER, Mass. – Abby Carney graduated from Assumption College May 24. She is the daughter of Nancy Carney of Hampden.

Boston University

BOSTON – Carl Bonin of Orono, Nathaniel Picard of Orrington, Jeff Dorrity of Winterport and Aurora Elmore of Bangor graduated in May from Boston University.

Bonin earned a master’s degree in international relations and communication. Picard a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, Dorrity a bachelor’s degree in film and television, and Elmore a bachelor’s degree in earth science.

Gettysburg College

Michael Whorton of Orono has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Gettysburg College.

Gordon College

WENHAM, Mass. – Amanda Dumond received a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature during graduation ceremonies May 17 at Gordon College. The daughter of Ervin and Carla Dumond of Orrington, she is a 1999 graduate of Bangor Christian School.

During her junior year, Dumond studied at Oxford University in England. She served for three years as a staff writer on The Tartan, the Gordon College student newspaper. She worked as a writing tutor and English as a Second Language tutor at the college and was inducted into the Phi Alpha Chi scholastic honor society at graduation.

Middlebury College

MIDDELBURY, Vt. – Adam Sewall of Orono is one of six Middlebury College students who received a Public Service Leadership Award on April 14.

For the last four years, Sewall has served as friend, mentor and helper to Butch Varno, 53, who has cerebral palsy. Sewall tutored Varno and helped with his physical therapy. Sewall played a leadership role in the team of volunteers who manage Varno’s personal needs and helped Varno successfully complete his GED, a challenge Varno has been working on for years.

As a recipient of the leadership award, Sewall will choose a nonprofit organization to receive a $300 donation, given by Middlebury College.

New England School of Communication

BANGOR – Eric LaPlante of Bangor is one of 400 students nationwide to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

Norwich University

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Blake Civiello of Bangor, Brian Groshon of Hampden, Joshua Frederick of Hermon, Paul Gillett of Orono and Patrick Skall of Orono were named to the dean’s list at Norwich University for the spring semester.

Tufts University

MEDFORD, Mass. – Marguerite Beiser, Jeffrey Bower, Tsega Menelik and Colby Spencer, all of Bangor, and Sara Burrill of Winterport were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Tufts University.

University of Southern Maine

PORTLAND – Sean Kraft was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Southern Maine. He graduated from USM in May and enlisted in the U.S. Army. He is the son of Vic and Chris Kraft of Bangor.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Natalie Davis of Bangor, Anna Liberatore of Bangor, Arielle A. Bridges of Brewer, Garrett Martin of East Holden, Jill Husson of Glenburn, and Katie A. Lozito of Hampden were named to the dean’s list at the University of Vermont for the spring semester.

Wells College

AURORA, N.Y. – Amanda Lescarbeau has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Wells College. She is the daughter of Norman and Janine Lescarbeau of Winterport.
