BANGOR – In 1913, society women who were concerned about the health of the poor created the Bangor Health Committee. They hired registered nurse Edith Bicknell, who made her first home visit July 28, 1913. Edith traveled by foot, horse and buggy, and trolley to see her patients.

Now known as Bangor Area Visiting Nurses, the agency will celebrate 90 years of home visits with a wine and cheese reception 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, at Cafe Nouveau.

“We are proud of our 90 years of service in the Greater Bangor-Brewer area,” said Helen Genco, president and chief executive officer of the agency.

“Our commitment today is the same as back then – to provide quality, compassionate care at home, where people most want to be. We think Edith would be proud.”

Donations to benefit BAVN community programs and services will be accepted at the reception, but are not required. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. Gross, Minsky & Mogul is sponsoring the event.
