AUGUSTA – A judge Wednesday ordered that a young woman charged with setting her family’s house on fire undergo a psychiatric evaluation and not have contact with her family.
Alyssa Jensen, 18, is charged with arson, accused of dousing her family’s home with gasoline and setting it on fire early Sunday morning while her parents and four siblings were sleeping.
Jensen’s parents, Stuart and Paula Jensen, and their other four adopted children, who range from 14 to 24, escaped from their single-story wood-framed house without any major injuries.
Judge Rae Ann French ordered Jensen be held on bail of $100,000 cash or $250,000 surety.
Prosecutor Evert Fowle, district attorney for Kennebec and Somerset counties, said he requested a high bail because he believes Jensen may be a risk to herself and others.
“We’ve got to make sure the public is protected from her and that she is protected from herself,” Fowle said. “Until we know more about her, it’s imperatively important that she not be out with the rest of us until these issues can be explored.”
According to an affidavit, family members told Investigator Kenneth Grimes of the State Fire Marshal’s Office that Alyssa Jensen told them several times that she set the fire.
The affidavit said that when investigators asked one of the sisters why she thought Jensen started the fire, the sister replied, “I think she was trying to kill my family.”
The family moved to Fayette nine months ago from Wisconsin.
The Jensens were living in a four-room structure that was intended to be used as a garage for the home they are building there.
Family members were not present for Alyssa Jensen’s District Court hearing Wednesday.
