AMITY – A Houlton man died Thursday night after he lost control of his car and struck a utility pole on Route 1.

Ryan Wright, 29, died at the scene of the 9:30 p.m. accident, according to Maine State Police Trooper Brian Harris.

Wright, who was alone, was northbound on Route 1, about 18 miles south of Houlton, when he may have lost control of his vehicle, drove off the right-hand side of the road, and struck the pole, Harris said Friday.

Residents in the area lost power for about three hours, Harris said.

Wright’s 1999 four-door sedan was demolished in the incident. Wright was wearing a seat belt, and the air bag in the vehicle deployed, Harris said.

No other vehicles were involved.

Wright was driving on a straight section of the highway, going downhill, when his vehicle left the road.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation Friday.

The Houlton fire and ambulance departments, as well as personnel from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department responded.
