So many times I’ve pointed out that the walkway of markers at the Maine Korean War Memorial in Bangor’s Mount Hope Cemetery honors veterans from several wars.

That’s true, but this week we really need to focus on those who served in the Korean War, for which a truce was signed 50 years ago on July 27.

The names of 245 Mainers killed in the Korean War have been carved into the memorial’s black granite monument, built in 1995 in an effort led by Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter 1, Maine Korean War Veterans. The location, just off Mount Hope Avenue, was donated for the state memorial by Mount Hope Cemetery.

Those listed on the memorial are fathers, husbands, brothers, sons and friends of many of us.

My husband and sons, with their Franco-American ancestry, would be distant cousins of Master Sgt. Romeo Castonguay, one of the Mainers killed in the war. More than 15 years ago, I helped a correspondent who was looking for information on Castonguay.

Since then, I’ve interviewed many war veterans, including members of Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter, who never gave up on their dream of honoring those with whom they served.

Do visit the memorial, sit quietly or walk around the monument. The memorial comprises vital records – in more ways than one.

Better yet, attend the ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the armistice at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 27, at Mount Hope Cemetery.
