PORTLAND – The often-complicated process of applying for prescription drug assistance just got easier for Maine residents. “RxCaresForMaine,” a searchable database of more than 325 national assistance programs, is now available to provide Mainers with easier access to affordable prescription drugs.

Applicants can log on to www.RxCaresforME.org or call (877) RxForMe (793-6763) for comprehensive information about the programs and to determine their eligibility.

Sen. Olympia Snowe and Rep. Mike Michaud partnered with the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America in May to develop the program, the first of its kind in the nation, in response to statewide layoffs and the rising costs of prescription drugs, Snowe said.

“With the cost of prescription drugs increasing by 16 percent between 1999 and 2002, there is a clear and desperate need to provide discounts to Maine residents, especially those who have been laid off due to the downturn in the economy,” she said.

Discount drug programs are often available, but can be difficult for seniors and low-income residents to navigate, Snowe said.

After answering four questions regarding age, income, family size and the name of the medication sought, a brief search returns information about corresponding programs, including eligibility criteria, contact information and application requirements.
