Harvey, Young lead selections for All-Zone 1 4 Falcons earn first-team honors

BREWER – Jason Harvey of Brewer and Josh Young of Bangor head up the 2003 American Legion All-Zone 1 baseball team selected by the zone’s coaches at Brewer High School on Tuesday evening.

Harvey, a former Bucksport High School star now playing at Husson College, batted .475 during during the regular season for the South Division champions, who will take a 21-1 record into this week’s Zone 1 tournament at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

The Brewer shortstop also hit five home runs and had 30 RBIs, 29 runs scored, 12 doubles and four triples.

“Jason’s greatest asset,” said Brewer coach David Morris, “is that he makes the people around him better.”

Harvey was one of four Brewer players selected to the All-Zone 1 first team.

Young was named the Zone 1 Pitcher of the Year. He compiled a 5-2 regular-season record with a 0.95 earned run average, and had 55 strikeouts and just 19 hits allowed in 44 innings for Bangor, which won the zone’s North Division with a 14-8 record.

John Montgomery of Lincoln earned the zone’s Coach of the Year Award. Montgomery guided Lincoln to a 13-9 record and a Zone 1 playoff berth in his first year as head coach.

The six-team, double-elimination Zone 1 tournament begins Thursday with three games: No. 1 Brewer (21-1) vs. No. 6 Calais (11-11) at noon; No. 2 Bangor (14-8) vs. No. 5 Lincoln (13-9) at 4 p.m.; and No. 3 Trenton (14-8) vs. No. 4 Penquis (12-10) at 8 p.m.
