PEABODY, Mass. – Seven Maine golfers have survived the cut for the 74th New England Amateur Championship being held at the Salem Country Club.

The first round of the event was completed Wednesday after severe thunderstorms forced the postponement of play Tuesday. With more inclement weather expected Thursday, tournament officials decided to cut the 162-player field to 60 based on first-round results. Those 60 golfers are scheduled to play the final 36 holes of the tournament Thursday, but if not all 36 holes can be completed, scores from the first 18 holes will be used to determine the champion.

Four golfers are tied atop the first-round leaderboard at 3-under-par 67: defending champion Kevin Quinn, Jim Renner, Billy Auger and Mike Welch. Mainers who survived the cut are Ricky Jones of Rockland GC (71), James Frost Jr. of Penobscot Valley CC (72), Joseph Manganaro of Spring Meadows GC (73), Shawn Warren of Gorham CC (73), Mark Plummer of Augusta CC (74), Gary Manoogian of Falmouth CC (75) and Adam Smith of Kebo Valley CC (75).
