Runners looking for a weekend race on a fast course, along with plenty of post-race snacks and entertainment, will find just that in Bucksport on Saturday.
The Fort Knox Bay Festival 5K, which is part of the Applebee’s/Sub 5 Race Series, will likely be a bit more popular this year, according to race director Fred Merriam.
“We have been topping out at about 100 [runners in past years],” Merriam said. “But this year we’ve got two Navy ships [in the Penobscot for the festival] and they’ve got teams competing against each other. I’m speculating that we’ll get between 150 and 200 people.”
Merriam said Navy teams will be providing part of the post-race entertainment, as sailors will compete in a mud tug-of-war. Live music will also be playing all day, Merriam said.
Merriam said the out-and-back course is slightly uphill early, but runners will get to enjoy a mile-long downhill stretch on their way to the finish line.
Then … it’s time to eat.
“The primary sponsor is Hannaford Brothers, and the first few years they came in with these bushel baskets full of peaches and bagels and food.”
Awards are also unique: They’re miniature Fort Knox cannons.
“Those have become collectors’ items,” Merriam said. “People compete to get these cannons.”
Registration for the Fort Knox Bay Festival 5K will be staged beginning at 7 a.m. at the credit union across from the International Paper mill in Bucksport. The race begins at 8 a.m., and a parade will follow.
