ORONO – The game got away from the Bangor Lumberjacks on “get-away” day Thursday as the Elmira Pioneers secured a tie in the four-game series with a 14-0 victory.

The Pioneers blazed a trail around the bases as only one hitter in the lineup came away with a hit and seven had two or more in a 21-hit barrage on a humid, overcast night at Mahaney Diamond.

“This was just one of those games. It was like the game the Red Sox had today and I was listening to that while I was driving in,” said Bangor manager Kash Beauchamp.

Bangor’s offense was as anemic as Elmira’s was potent. Bangor as a team had just one more hit than Pioneers catcher Brian Jones, who went 5-for-6 with a double, three runs, and two RBIs.

“This is the first time in my career. I had four hits in a game last week and I was pretty happy about that,” Jones said. “I started off the season hot and then hit the bottom of the barrel, so I guess I’ll just enjoy it.”

Elmira, now 8-6, enjoyed it a lot as the offensive onslaught was more than enough to back up starter Geronimo Mendoza, who improves to 7-5 with a complete game. He struck out four and walked two batters.

“The funny thing is everything worked for him tonight. We didn’t use the curveball too much and only the slider when we needed it, but he was outstanding,” said Jones. “We didn’t shake each other off hardly at all either and for us to do that is a real good thing.”

Bangor is now 8-5 and despite the lopsided loss, boarded the bus for a three-game series in New Jersey with optimism.

“This is easier to take than a 2-1 loss in the ninth, actually. You have a lot of time to come to terms with it and get over it, and some of us had more time than others,” said Beauchamp, who was ejected in the fourth inning.

Elmira jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A fielding error by shortstop Sandy Martinez with two outs opened the door and the Pioneers burst it open with a Rafael Alvarez stolen base, a Scott Hunter RBI single, and a Jones RBI double.

The Pioneers upped their lead to three runs in the third after Cleatus Davidson ripped a one-out double to the right-field corner and, one out later, scored on a Hunter double.

GAME NOTES: Bangor made two personnel moves Thursday night as the team released outfielder and Jay native Edwin Thompson and traded reliever Donnie Thomas to New Jersey as the “player to be named later” in a recent deal with the Jackals.

Bangor will be picking up two pitchers, one a recent graduate of Millersville (Pa.) College and another a former teammate of Bangor pitcher Brandon Bowe. They will join the team in New Jersey.
