CHEVY CHASE, Md. – Jesse Speirs of Bangor won his first match on Wednesday before falling in the Round of 16 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship at Columbia Country Club.

Speirs, 16, entered the match-play sessions as the No. 60 seed among 64 players still vying for the title. He won his Thursday morning match against No. 28 Taylor Hall of La Grange, Ga., 3 and 2 to advance to the third round with 15 other golfers.

Speirs lost his afternoon match to No. 21 Michael Randle of Austin, Texas, by a 2 and 1 score (down two holes with one left to play).
