BELFAST – A local man released from jail last Tuesday was back behind bars after he was stopped Sunday while allegedly driving a stolen pickup truck in Canaan.

David L. Littlefield, 21, of Belfast was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and operating after suspension. He was booked at Somerset County Jail and transferred Monday to Waldo County Jail, where he is being held for violating probation.Littlefield is accused of taking a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck belonging to a Belfast woman from the back parking lot of the Waldo County General Hospital.

The woman reported the theft at 3:36 p.m. Sunday. The keys had been left in the vehicle. A police bulletin on the missing vehicle was issued later that afternoon.

At 7 that night, city police were informed that Littlefield had been stopped while driving the truck in Canaan, Police Chief Allen Weaver said Monday.

Weaver said an off-duty state trooper spotted the missing truck and pulled it over.

At the time of his arrest, Littlefield was on probation after having served nine months of a suspended four-year sentence for five counts of gross sexual assault. He was sentenced to the Waldo County Jail in November and released from jail on Tuesday.

The terms of his four-year probation required that Littlefield not engage in criminal activity.
