ELLSWORTH – Kim Jordan cranked a home run and a triple to spark a seven-run sixth inning as Bangor defeated South Lewiston 23-22 in state Little League softball all-star action for ages 9-10 Monday.

Julie Clifford hit a home run, a triple and a single for the winners and Geri Cosgrove added a double and three singles. Taylor Lewis contributed four singles while Lindsey Allen chipped in with a triple.

Michelle Caron led South Lewiston with a home run, a double and a single while Shyan Baillargeon contributed with two doubles.

At Knox, James Morse pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and allowing only two hits and no walks to beat Katahdin.

Ian Barwise hit a two-run single for Kennebunk while Garnett Hathaway hit an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.

Andy Kay recorded two singles for Katahdin.

At Knox, Nick Little hit a home run for Rockland to help spark the victory.

Josh Harjula scored on a passed ball after stealing second and third for Rockland.

Jared Dorr scored Sunrise’s lone run on an error after stealing second and third bases and being hit by a pitch.

Bucksport captures state crown

At Bar Harbor Sunday, Chris Maguire scattered six hits while walking three and striking out three to help Bucksport beat Cumberland-North Yarmouth 6-2 for its first Junior League state title.

Cumberland-NY forced the second game after beating Bucksport 15-8 earlier Sunday.

Bucksport advanced to regional play in New Jersey where it will play New Hampshire on Aug. 2.

Alex Yates provided Bucksport with offensive support in the championship game as he slammed a two-run double in the first inning. Teddy Cooke chipped in with a two-run single and Matt Jackson added an RBI single.

Ryan Robb had an RBI single for Cumberland-NY.

In Sunday’s first game, Caleb Jordan drove in four runs with a two-run single and two-run double to pace Cumberland-NY. Robb added two singles, a double and three RBIs; D.J. Detweiler had a single and two-run double and Josh Goldsmith had two singles and a double.

Yates singled twice and drove in three runs for Bucksport, Todd Freeman doubled and singled and Maguire singled twice and drove in a run.

At Bar Harbor on Saturday, Bucksport pushed Cumberland-North Yarmouth into the losers bracket with an 8-2 win in the first game of the day, Bangor eliminated York 15-5 in the second game, and then Cumberland-NY ousted Bangor in the day’s final game 2-1.

In the first game Alex Yates held Cumberland-NY to five hits to notch the win and aided his own cause with two singles and three RBIs.

Chris Maguire chipped in with an RBI double and two singles, Pat Gedmon singled twice and Teddy Cooke had a two-run double.

Caleb Jordan had a single and RBI double for Cumberland-NY.

In the second game, Alex Gallant notched the win on the mound and helped himself out with two singles and three RBIs. Kyle Vanidestine and Troy Jellison each contributed a double and single.

George Zotos led York with three singles and an RBI while Chris Knox and Jeff Cole each added a double and single.

In the third game, Cumberland-NY’s D.J. Detweiler and Bangor’s Neal Russell hooked up in a pitching classic with Russell allowing only one hit while striking out 10 and walking two.

Cumberland-NY, however, put across two runs in the fourth for Detweiler, who allowed five hits and three walks. A walk and two errors help produce his team’s runs.

Jacob Silver’s RBI single scored Russell for Bangor in the fourth.

State softball, 13-14

Bangor wins state title

At Bar Harbor, Bangor rallied from an 8-1 deficit to defeat Biddeford 10-9 Sunday to win the state Junior League softball championship.

Undefeated Bangor finished with three wins in the double-elimination tournament, including two victories against Biddeford – both by one run.

Stacey Gomm earned the pitching win for Bangor in the championship game. Taylor Lauritsen led the Bangor offense with two singles and two RBIs. Erica Tweedie, Jessie Strout and Katy McDonald also had two hits each for the winners.

Justine McCurry and Emily Rousseau had three hits each for Biddeford.

Biddeford, 2-2 in tourney play, advanced to the championship game by defeating Scarborough 19-3. Jen Nantel and Rousseau combined to pitch a three-hitter, while Kendra Martell had three singles and Sarah McDonough, Allison Perry, Heather Huot and Kayla Larochelle had two hits each.

At Bucksport, Zack Gardiner hit two singles and pitched four innings of a shutout baseball to help lead Westbrook to victory.

Matt Cotrell and Sean Murphy each contributed with RBI singles.

Chris Cole pitched a complete game for York, striking out six batters and walking only two.
