Michigan nips Bangor in national ASA tourney

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 5-3 victory over Bangor in the national ASA softball tourney for ages 14 and under Tuesday night.

Katy MacDonald turned in a strong pitching effort for Bangor as she scattered six hits while striking out six and not walking a batter.

Taylor Lauritson and Erin Gray each singled twice to lead the Bangor offense and each player also drove in a run.

Bangor and a team from New Hampshire are representing New England in the national tourney. Bangor will play another game in pool play at 2 p.m. today before moving to a double-elimination format on Thursday.

Thirty-three teams are competing in the tournament.

Rockland to battle Falmouth

At Knox, Josh Bodman hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and had a two-run single in the first inning to help Rockland defeat Kennebunk 7-6.

In the earlier game, Augusta West advanced to the championship round with an 11-3 victory over Falmouth.

Rockland plays Falmouth today in a 5:30 p.m. elimination game with the winner advancing to Thursday’s championship round at 2:30 p.m. against Augusta West. If Augusta West loses, then an if-necessary game would be played at 5:30 p.m.

In Tuesday’s second game, David McGuire had a RBI single in the first inning for Rockland and Anderson Murphy singled twice.

Robert Nutter struck out 10 while for Kennebunk and aided his own cause two-run homer in the first inning. D.J. Stockbridge hit a RBI triple in the first inning. Ian Barwise tripled and Henry Gould hit a RBI single.

Mustafa Hassenzada hit a three-run homer in the third inning to help Augusta West to the win.

Matt Childs hit a three-run double in the fifth inning for Augusta West and Aaron Allen had two singles with a RBI. Ryan Minoty doubled to drive in a run as Garrett Lucas and T.J. Vallee each doubled.

Collin Burnett hit a home run and a single for Falmouth and Sean Welch homered in the fourth inning.

At Bucksport, Mitch Chipman hit a double to drive in two runs and help Westbrook to the win and force one more game to decide the champion.

Adam Bergos hit a pair of singles for Westbrook. Nick Finocchiaro singled with two RBIs and Zack Gardiner hit a RBI single.

Kyle Bishop hit a triple and two singles with a RBI to lead Waterville. Cam Sawyer and Lance Lefebure each hit a RBI single in the fourth inning.

Cumberland-NY 2, Bangor 1

At Bar Harbor on Saturday, Cumberland-North Yarmouth eliminated Bangor 2-1 in a losers’ bracket game in the tourney as Cumberland-NY’s D.J. Detweiler and Bangor’s Ian Edwards hooked up in a pitching classic with Edwards allowing only one hit while striking out 10 and walking two.

Cumberland-NY, however, put across two runs in the fourth for Detweiler, who allowed five hits and three walks. A walk and two errors help produce his team’s runs.

Jacob Silver’s RBI single scored Russell for Bangor in the fourth.
