A chance meeting on the driving range at Columbia Country Club in Bethesda, Md., during the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship last week led to Jesse Speirs of Bangor having his name mentioned prominently on ESPN Radio’s Tony Kornheiser program Wednesday.
The fact that Speirs, who has been listening to Kornheiser’s national weekday program for a number of years, sent lobster rolls was the reason.
“We talked about the tournament and Maine,” said Speirs. “He wanted to know if I could get him some lobster rolls.”
Speirs assured him he could.
Kornheiser said on his program, “I didn’t believe he’d actually send the stuff.”
“I guess he’s not used to having 16-year-olds tell him they’ll send something and then actually doing it,” said Speirs.
He got the lobster from McLaughlin’s Seafood on Main Street in Bangor and the rolls from Frank’s Bakery on State Street, then sent them overnight express by FedEx, for whom his dad works.
Speirs made sure to listen to Wednesday’s program.
“He said he would say something if they arrived,” said Speirs.
Playfully, he also included instructions. Open box, put lobster meat in roll, open mouth and insert roll.
The box that arrived Wednesday said “live lobsters” on it, according to Kornheiser, “which was a little bit scary because I didn’t know what we would do with live lobsters.”
Speirs also included a message, “P.S. You da man, Tony. Have a great day. Jesse.”
Speirs first saw Kornheiser earlier at the club, but didn’t get to meet him then.
“He’s a member at the club,” said Speirs, “and he spoke at the players’ dinner.”
After Speirs qualified for the match play portion of the competition, he happened to go down to the club’s driving range.
“He and his wife were … talking to the range guy,” said Speirs. “I decided to go over and introduce myself.”
They talked for about 10 minutes, said Speirs.
“He’s just like a regular guy,” Speirs added.
