Golf course owners offer reward for net

CHESTERVILLE – The owners of a golf course where a safety net worth more than $900 was stolen are so perturbed they’re offering a $1,000 reward.

Ethel Bardsley was mowing the greens at Sandy River Golf Course Monday when she discovered 300 feet of netting missing along the sixth hole. “I’m just disgusted,” Bardsley said.

The 12.5-foot tall green netting was used to prevent stray golf balls from going onto George Thomas Road. State police are investigating its theft.

Meanwhile, Bardsley and her husband, Russell, are offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. The couple also has bought new netting and cables to replace the stolen ones.

“The state police’s theory is the netting is probably going to be used to camouflage marijuana fields,” Bardsley said. “My theory is somebody wants a home driving range.”
