Moran, Harvey make statement for Falcons

AUGUSTA – The 2003 state American Legion baseball tournament couldn’t have started in a more emphatic fashion for the Brewer Falcons.

Right-hander Pat Moran pitched a no-hitter, and shortstop Jason Harvey slammed two home runs good for seven RBIs at Morton Field on Sunday as the Zone 1 champions pounded Zone 3 runner-up Mid Coast 12-0 in a game halted in the seventh inning by the 10-run rule.

“We wanted to come out and make a statement about our zone and about us being here,” said Brewer catcher Marcus Boober. “Everybody’s been talking about the Portland teams, and no one has been talking about us.

“Our record isn’t deceiving. We’ve earned what we’ve got.”

Brewer will take its state-best 26-1 record into a winners’ bracket game at 4 p.m. Monday against Andrews Post of Portland, which beat Augusta 9-1 Sunday. Mid Coast (18-6) faces an elimination game against Augusta.

Moran took a perfect game into the seventh inning before Mid Coast catcher Pierce Wiegman drew a one-out walk on four pitches. Jon Tefft then reached on an error before Moran retired the side on two flyouts for what turned out to be his first no-hitter since Little League.

“This is the best game I’ve pitched in a long time,” said Moran, a Hampden Academy product who had to wait an extra day to make his state American Legion tourney debut because of the rain that forced postponement of first-round play Saturday.

Moran threw 100 pitches, mixing his fastball with an occasional changeup and a curve that got better as the game went along.

“My curve wasn’t great when the game began, but I got on top of it later and was able to use it more early in the count so they wouldn’t be able to sit on first-pitch fastballs,” said Moran, now 6-0 this summer and 11-0 over the past two American Legion seasons.

Harvey was as dominant at the plate as Moran was on the mound. The Zone 1 Player of the Year hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to open up what had been a competitive pitching matchup between Moran and Mid Coast left-hander Brian Gerrish, then ended the game with a three-run shot off reliever Andy Cantrell with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to end the game.

Both were mammoth shots approaching 400 feet, the grand slam to straightaway leftfield and the three-run shot more toward the leftfield line.

“They were both fastballs,” said Harvey, who now has 21 RBIs in five postseason games. “It was good to come right back out hitting the ball again like we did at the zone tournament. We worked hard during practices on just driving the ball.”

Kevin McAvoy added a solo homer and a double to Brewer’s nine-hit attack, while Boober hit a pair of singles and scored three runs. Kyle Mercer, Jake Knight and Zac Bouzan-Kaloustian also scored two runs each.

“We hit the ball, and Pat pitched great,” said Boober. “He pitched the game of his life. His curve was awesome, and he threw harder than he has all year. We’ve been roommates all week, and we talked about this game all the time.”

Brewer broke on top with two runs in the third inning, with an infield single by Kyle Dalton delivering one run. The Falcons then chased Gerrish in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate to score five runs. The Falcons pushed their lead to 8-0 on an RBI single by Knight in the fifth, and McAvoy’s homer in the sixth gave Brewer a nine-run cushion.
