Bangor man indicted in First Street Slaying Charges also include assault on brother

BANGOR – A Bangor man accused of murdering a neighbor and allegedly attacking his own younger brother with a baseball bat was indicted Monday by a Penobscot County grand jury.

Walter Travis, 26, was indicted for intentional or knowing murder in the death of Thomas Forni and aggravated attempted murder for hitting his brother James Travis, 18, with a baseball bat. Both incidents took place on Tuesday, June 24, in a section of Bangor bordered by First, Second and Cedar streets.

At that time, the brothers lived in separate apartments in the same building at the corner of Second and Cedar streets. Forni, 51, lived on First Street and was a friend of Kevin Travis, father of the brothers.

Walter Travis hit his brother James Travis with a baseball bat sometime after 10 p.m., according to court documents. After the alleged attack, James Travis said that he and his father tried to restrain Walter Travis.

During the scuffle, the younger brother reportedly stabbed Walter Travis repeatedly with a pocketknife. According to James Travis, his older brother left the apartment bleeding from the abdomen, leaving a trail of blood to First Street, where Forni lived.

Forni died of sharp force trauma, according to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta. Police took Walter Travis into custody in Forni’s apartment, according to neighbors.

No charges have been filed against James Travis, according to Bangor police. Walter Travis remains in Penobscot County Jail. His arraignment on the charges has not been scheduled.
