AUGUSTA – In conjunction with National Farmers’ Market Week, Gov. John Baldacci has proclaimed Aug. 3-9 as Maine Farmers’ Market Week.

Economic development from local investment in farmers markets and the resulting tourism are among the benefits the markets provide, the governor said.

The number of statewide farmers markets has increased 30 percent in the last year, from 54 markets in 2002 to 70 in 2003.
