For more than 50 years, the Fulbright Commission, an educational exchange program, has awarded grants to young scholars from the United States who would like to study abroad. The German program is funded jointly by the German and American governments with the purpose of promoting academic excellence and cultural understanding between the United States and Germany.
Established in 1952, the German-American Fulbright Program implements Sen. J. William Fulbright’s concept: the promotion of mutual understanding between two countries through academic and bicultural exchange, creating individuals who know and understand the world as it is seen from both sides of the ocean.
The defining characteristic of the German-American Fulbright Program is student exchange complemented by a year of academic programs for professors, teachers, teaching assistants and journalists.
The German-U.S. Fulbright commission 12-member board consists of both German and American members and includes the German foreign minister and the American ambassador to Germany. The Fulbright foreign scholarship board, whose members are appointed by the president of the United States, provides grant guidelines.
