Webber puts energy into urban renewal

BANGOR – Webber Energy Fuels is giving a roughly $100,000 face-lift to the building it owns at 146 Center St.

After The Salvation Army moved out, the company felt the vacancy was a good chance to breathe new life into the Center Street building, according to Raymond Cota, Webber’s vice president.

“We’re trying to be a good neighbor on that side of town,” Cota said. “The building was tired-looking.”

The company owns some of the older buildings in town and has rehabilitated the multiuse building at 499 Hammond St. as well as its main offices at 700 Main St.

Demolition of the 9,000-square-foot space began a little over a month ago and a new roof has already been put on the building, Cota said. The inside will be refinished into two separate sections. Webber will use 3,500 square feet for storage and is currently in negotiations with a nonprofit organization for the larger section. The adjacent parking lot will also be repaved and striped, he said.

Exterior renovations, including new windows and a new facade, should be completed by next month, and the new tenants could move in by October, Cota said.

“It’s just our way of making the city look a little nicer,” he said.
