Milford searching for new manager Sept. 30 deadline set for resumes

MILFORD – The town of Milford is looking for a new manager. Manager Vance Merritt’s contract will not be renewed, by mutual decision, and advertisements for a new person to fill the position are in local newspapers.

“When I came onto the scene I had already retired as a town manager and I had the reputation of being a troubleshooter,” Merritt said Thursday. “I took the job to see if I could give them direction to take care of some interoffice issues. I think we have them pretty well in hand and in control, so it’s time for me to move on. I’m crisis-orientated.”

Merritt, who spent three years as town manager, said he would be available for consulting work if the town needs it. He said the town is looking to hire a person who knows numbers and who has a grant-writing background.

“I think they do need a town manager with a background in accounting or bookkeeping,” he said.

Merritt’s last day is Aug. 29. He said the selectmen would hold down the office until a replacement is hired. For anyone interested in the position, resumes should be turned in to the town office by Sept. 30.

During Wednesday’s town meeting, the selectmen signed tax commitment papers setting the property tax rate at 21 mills. They also decided not to move dirt located behind a fence adjacent to the cemetery or to install a water meter to regulate how much water the Fire Department is using to fill its pump tanks. The selectmen also tabled a request to lease the old fire barn to a pediatrician from Pennsylvania. Selectmen first want to talk to the town attorney.

The doctor, who is originally from the area, is considering remodeling the fire barn building into an office so he can relocate, said Merritt.

“It’s [the building] just kind of a dumping area,” he said. “If he wanted to lease it and improve the property, my recommendation is to lease it to him for a minimal amount so we can have a doctor in the area. It can only be a benefit to the town in the future. I’m sure a lot of parents with children would say that’s great.”
