‘Dogs halt 9-game losing streak

PORTLAND – Junior Herndon pitched seven scoreless innings and Raul Nieves and Kevin Haverbusch drove in two runs each as the Portland Sea Dogs snapped a nine-game losing streak by beating the Binghamton Mets 7-0 Friday in the Eastern League.

Herndon struck out six, walked two and allowed only two runners to reach second base as he improved to 7-6. Andy Shibilo tossed two scoreless innings to preserve the team shutout.

The Sea Dogs (60-57) tallied all the runs they needed in the second inning, scoring three times on a leadoff walk, four singles and two errors. Nieves’ second RBI single of the evening made it 4-0 in the fourth inning and Haverbusch’s two-run single was the key hit as the Sea Dogs scored three runs in the sixth.

Binghamton (56-64) starter David Mattox gave up all six runs, five earned, and fell to 6-6 with the loss.
