Sunday: 1 p.m. Heritage, 3:45 p.m. Two Rivers
The Old Grey Goose is a Maine country dance band that has been playing and singing old-time country music and songs of the Pine Tree State and the Maritime Provinces for more than 20 years. The group teaches and calls New England contradances for schools and community groups, and it presents stories and songs, humorous and historical, in concert performances. Much of the group’s repertoire comes from traditional music collected from musicians and singers throughout the Northeast. Carter Newell of Damariscotta, Doug Protsik of Woolwich and Jeff “Smokey” McKeen of Montville perform in the group.
When Newell isn’t working on aquaculture projects, he loves to play his fiddle with The Old Grey Goose and with his wife, Kaity, and The Newell Family Band. He has collected tunes from old Maine fiddlers, such as Arnold Kennedy from Aroostook County, and has traveled extensively with his fiddle throughout the British Isles and the Maritimes.
Doug Prostik plays “old-time piano” for dances and honky-tonk saloons. He has developed a passion for the art of silent-movie piano accompaniment and has pursued his interests through research and performance across the country. He produced all three of The Old Grey Goose’s recordings and plays accordion and fiddle.
McKeen is an oyster farmer and musician from Montville who is dedicated to keeping the old-time music of Maine alive. He has played with The Old Grey Goose for more than 20 years and conducted workshops in schools all over Maine. He plays button accordion, guitar, banjo and the bones.
At the festival, The Old Grey Goose band will be host to an all-Maine “variety show” with performances by a number of special guests.
