FOLK/Welcome John E. Baldacci

Having grown up in Bangor, there are many aspects of the city I have come to love. The Kenduskeag Stream Race, Fourth of July celebration and Bangor State Fair are among the many events that make it such an extraordinary city. The National Folk Festival is yet another that has enhanced my love for Bangor.

With it, the festival brings valuable business to Bangor’s downtown and helps to revitalize the city’s beautiful waterfront. Because the festival site is integrated into the downtown, it gives visitors an opportunity to explore the local shops and restaurants and to get to know the community.

In addition, the festival is a chance to educate local residents and visitors who come from across the country about an array of cultures represented through different forms of art. Crafts, music and dancing are just a few ways the festival brings such diversity to the Bangor community. Its interactive shows and programs involve the audience and allow them to experience the excitement of creating such wonderful art, music and dance themselves.

Providing these opportunities and enriching communities such as Bangor with the arts is incredibly important. The “creative economy” of Maine and a dedication to arts education are imperative for the growth of our cities, economically, educationally and culturally. Not to mention that events like the festival are great entertainment for all ages.

So get ready for some pie cones, falafels and baked beans! Sit back and relax or get up and dance to the fantastic sounds of the National Folk Festival!
