BANGOR – Two additional members of the Waldo County “Red Devil” heroin ring were sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court .
Peter McLaughlin, 40, of Lincolnville was sentenced to 35 months in prison and four years of supervised release for possession of narcotics with the intent to sell, distribute or dispense cocaine. He pleaded guilty to the charge in April.
McLaughlin was arrested with a small amount of heroin and 500 grams of cocaine in his car in late 2002.
He was bringing the drugs into Waldo County from Lowell, Mass., according to his attorney, Thomas Hallett of Portland.
Demain Michael Sullivan, 33, of Liberty was sentenced to 32 months in prison and four years of supervised release for possession of narcotics with the intent to sell distribute or dispense cocaine. He pleaded guilty to the charge in March.
Both men were arrested on information gleaned from an undercover investigation in May 2002 that led to one of the state’s largest heroin busts.
During that investigation, police seized 1,650 bags of heroin, a pound of cocaine and $5,000 from Robert Orchard, 55, of Northport, and 250 bags of heroin, an ounce of cocaine and $1,800 from Russell Belden, 38, of Brooks.
Both men received long sentences in March for running the “Red Devil” drug ring, whose name comes from the silhouette of a red devil with a pitchfork printed on the drug packets.
Orchard was sentenced to 101/2 years and Belden was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
The sentencing of a third man, Tristan Grasso, 26, of Northport, was rescheduled for Monday. He pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin.
Two more members of the ring, William Stevens, 64, of Frankfort and Timothy Paggi, age unknown, of Lowell, Mass., await sentencing.
