Winter port

Why settle for any port in a storm? You can have “The Flying Dutchman,” a blackberry port-style wine that is the first in the Winterport Winery’s schooner series of specialty wines. It is a full-bodied, rich, fortified wine that pairs as well with chocolate as it does with cheese and nuts. It is the latest feature at the winery’s tasting room, located at the intersection of Routes 69 and 1A in Winterport. For information, visit www.winterportwinery.com or call 223-4500.

The berry fest

Got the blues? Get even more this weekend at the 28th annual Machias Wild Blueberry Festival – a large-scale tribute to the diminutive fruit. It kicks off Friday, Aug. 15, with a children’s parade, fish-fry and a musical. A blueberry-pancake breakfast gets Saturday started, and if you’re still hungry afterward, you can sample some of the entries in the wild-blueberry cooking contest, or you can participate in the blueberry pie-eating contest. For a full list of events, visit www.machiasblueberry.com.

Pork on your fork

Go beyond plain pork chops with “Farm Table to Family Table,” a free recipe booklet from the National Pork Board. It includes family favorites from across the country, such as Nutty Blue Cheese-Stuffed Chops, Pork Scallopine with Mushroom Cream Sauce, or Apple and Spice Pork Roast. For a copy of the booklet, visit www.otherwhitemeat.com or send a self-addressed mailing label to: Farm Table to Family Table Recipe Booklet, National Pork Board, P.O. Box 9114, Des Moines, IA 50306.
