BANGOR – Curacao righthander Arthur Bonevacia picked up an impressive win and a headache during his team’s 11-0 victory over Guam in the Senior League World Series Wednesday afternoon at Mansfield Stadium.

Brenham, Texas, lefthander Clayton Groover already had a hamstring pull entering his game against Urbandale, Iowa, but was able to pitch his second gem of the tourney, a two-hitter, as Brenham stayed alive with a 6-2 triumph Wednesday night.

Bonevacia rebounded from a loss to Panama in the Latin America Regionals with a sparkling four-hit complete game despite getting hit in the back of the head by a throw from first baseman Shairon Martis.

Martis was trying to throw the ball around the infield after snaring a foul popup in the sixth inning.

“It hurt,” grinned Bonevacia, who continued after a brief delay.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with his arm as he struck out four and walked one while throwing 44 strikes among his 70 pitches.

“My fastball and my slider were my best pitches,” said the 15-year-old Bonevacia. “I also throw a curveball, changeup, and, sometimes, a knuckleball.”

He said he ran his two-seam fastball in on the hands of righthanded hitters and away from the lefties.

He added that it was one of the better games he’s pitched this season.

“He was good. He threw like he has to throw,” said Curacao catcher Kenley Jansen.

“His location was good,” said Guam first baseman Andrew Arce. “Our hitting fell apart.”

Meanwhile, the defending champs supported him with a 12-hit attack and an errorless performance in the field.

Asia-Pacific champ Hatgana, Guam, now 0-2 in round-robin play, committed six errors leading to eight unearned runs.

Pabao Senior League of Curacao, 3-0, has qualified for Friday’s semifinals.

Curacao scored the only runs Bonevacia was to need in the two-run second inning.

Levi Carolus was hit on the helmet by an Andrew Benavente pitch and scored on an outfield overthrow of third on Kenley Jansen’s single to right.

Ramichel Martis singled home Jansen.

Carolus singled home a third-inning run, Shurendy Mariano’s base hit delivered a fourth-inning run, and Curacao added two unearned runs in the sixth before pushing five more across the plate in the seventh.

Carolus, Sharlon Schoop and Martis had two hits apiece for Curacao while Justin Sablan singled twice for Guam.

In the last game, Groover struck out 10, walked five, and hit three batters while throwing 138 pitches, 67 of which were strikes. Both runs off him were unearned.

He had pitched a five-inning two-hitter in a mercy rule-shortened 13-0 win over Guam in their tourney opener Sunday.

“I didn’t throw as good as I’d like to, but, nonetheless, I got the job done, I got the win and everything. My defense helped me out when they could,” said the hard-throwing Groover. “This was a much poorer performance than the first game. But for pitching with two day’s rest and the little rest I’ve had, I think I did all right.”

He said he threw “about 98 percent fastballs. My curve ball wasn’t working at all and they couldn’t hit the fastball so I just kept throwing it.”

“He was real tough,” said Urbandale pitcher Pat Hoberg. “His fastball got in on you quick and his curve was tough to lay off. It broke a lot. And he spotted his pitches.”

Groover also aided his own cause by starting two rallies with leadoff hits, a double in the third and a single in the fifth.

“I surprised myself with the hits tonight. I’m not much of a hitter but pitchers want to be hitters sometimes,” said Groover. “I like to help the team out any way I can.”

Groover’s single in the fifth started a two-run rally that erased a 2-1 deficit.

Tyler Faubion followed with a double to right-center for his seventh hit in 13 World Series at-bats.

“I sat back and went with the pitch,” said Faubion.

Blake Schwarze tied it with a pop fly single into center and Wiley Crewson’s sacrifice fly broke the tie.

Texas scored three unearned runs in the sixth on a Bill Kankel single, two walks, an infield throwing error to the plate that allowed two runs to score, and a wild pitch.

Faubion had three hits for 2-2 Texas with Groover and Blake Schwarze adding two each.

Ryan Miles and Brady Thornton singled for 1-2 Iowa.
