PORTLAND – Eric Jorgensen fired an 8-under-par 64 Wednesday at Riverside Municipal Golf Course to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the 85th Charlie’s Maine Open Golf Championship.
Augusta amateur Jason Gall and Bolton, Mass., pro Kirk Hanefeld are tied at 65. Former PGA Tour pro Jim Hallet is another stroke back at 66, along with pros Dan Lapierre and Mike Meehan.
Mark Fogg, the head pro at Gorham Country Club, is the low Maine pro at 67. Bob Darling Jr., the head pro at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Auburn and a four-time winner of the State of Maine Championship, is next among Maine pros at 69.
Also at 69 are defending champion Ryan Ouellette of West Palm Beach, Fla., and former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman.
Among the amateurs, Tom Bean of Kennebunk posted a 68, 13-time Maine Amateur winner Mark Plummer of Manchester shot a 70, and Jesse Speirs of Bangor was at 71.
Seven-time Women’s Maine State Golf Association champion Abby Spector of Waterville and her brother, Toby, each shot 74.
