BAR HARBOR – Trustees of the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory have chosen a new chairman and three new board members.

The chairman is Terence Boylan of Rhinebeck, N.Y., founder and executive director of the John W. Boylan Foundation for International Medical Research. The foundation is a nonprofit that supports biomedical research and international scientist exchange fellowships.

The foundation is named for Boylan’s father, who was a longtime kidney researcher at the MDI Biological Laboratory.

Boylan succeeds Dr. James Boyer, who served as chairman for eight years.

The laboratory also elected three new board members: Phoebe Boyer, executive director of the Tiger Foundation, which helps nonprofits serve New York’s neediest families; Sally Bowles, an independent consultant from Essex, Conn.; and Dr. Richard M. Hays of Greenwich, Conn., who has been a full-time investigator and teacher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
