BANGOR – The Moscow, Russia, entry debuted in this year’s Senior League Baseball World Series with a whimper, a hitless shutout loss on Sunday.
But it’s amazing what overcoming a case of jet lag will do.
Moscow pounded out 16 hits Wednesday evening to top host Orono-Veazie 10-1 in a Pool A matchup.
Each of the first six starters in the lineup had at least two hits as Moscow improved to 2-1 in pool play.
“With eight hours time difference, we were asleep the first game,” said Moscow coach Mikhail Kornev. “Now we are awake.”
The loss dropped Orono-Veazie to 1-2 in the pool, leaving the tournament hosts in danger of not qualifying for Friday’s semifinals.
With Moscow, Central Chesterfield and Hilo, Hawaii – an 8-1 winner over Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday – all with 2-1 records, Orono-Veazie would need to beat Hilo on Thursday and hope for a series of results including favorable tiebreakers to work to its advantage in order to play again Friday.
“Hopefully we can put our best game of the tournament together [today],” said Orono-Veazie manager Jay Otis.
Moscow struck early, scoring seven runs in the first three innings off Orono-Veazie starter Dustin Thomas.
The European champs scored twice in the first inning, three runs in the second and two more runs in the top of the third for a 7-0 lead that quieted the crowd of 1,250 at Mansfield Stadium.
Moscow also played errorless defense behind left-hander Artem Chtcherbakov, who allowed three hits and one run over six innings while striking out three and walking just one.
“You have to give a lot of credit to the Russian team,” said Otis. “When you play against a team like this, you have to play fundamental baseball and make all the little plays.
“It was not that we played poorly, but they made all the plays.”
Orono-Veazie had four hits, including a sixth-inning triple to deep center that drove home Andrew Otis for the Maine District 3 champions’ lone run.
Dmitri Kondrashov, Ivan Kornev and Chtcherbakov, the 2-3-4 batters in the Moscow lineup, each had a double, two singles and two RBIs. Maxim Poliakov added a double and a single, while Serguei Grachev and Alexandre Kapoustkin each hit two singles.
Moscow will play Central Chesterfield today, with the winner assured one of the two Pool A semifinal berths.
Earlier on Wednesday, Kulea Bondallian pitched an eight-hitter as Hilo eliminated Calgary from championship contention.
Bondallian threw just 97 pitches, striking out six and walking no one as the U.S. West champions posted their second straight victory since an opening-day loss to Central Chesterfield.
“I was just trying to keep the ball low to get everybody hitting on the ground,” said Bondallian, a left-hander making his second tournament appearance and first start. “We played well. Now we need to get some rest and we’ll be OK.”
Bondallian also contributed two singles to an 11-hit Hilo attack paced by leadoff hitter Dane Inouye, who had three singles, and Matt Haasenritter, who doubled twice and drove home two runs.
Chris Copot and Mike O’Brien each singled twice for Calgary (1-3), while Mike Southwood added a double.
“They had a pretty good pitcher, and we just didn’t hit the ball again,” said Calgary coach Gary Southwood, whose team had managed just five hits in a 4-1 loss to Moscow on Tuesday. “That’s two days in a row we haven’t hit the ball well.”
This was a scoreless contest through two innings before Hilo reached Calgary starter Curtis Sehlstrom for two runs in the top of the third and four more runs in the fourth.
Inouye’s safety squeeze bunt scored Kyle Correia for the first run of the game, and Inouye, who reached base on the play, scored Hilo’s second run of the third inning on a double by Haasenritter that hit about two feet below the top of the fence in left field, about 340 feet from home plate.
Wes Yada’s two run single through a drawn-in infield highlighted the Hawaiians’ fourth-inning uprising.
Hilo added two runs in the top of the seventh, as Haasenritter hit an RBI double and scored on Bondallian’s single to center.
Calgary ended Bondallian’s shutout bid in the bottom of the seventh as Sehlstrom hit a leadoff single and scored on a two-out single by Jeff Stevenson.
