Orono High School
GREENVILLE – In celebration of Maine author Sanford Phippen’s new book, “Standing Just Outside the Door and Two Other Plays,” the Depot Street Development and Northern Lights Repertory Theatre will present a program featuring several scenes from the three plays published in May.
The play will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Depot Street Development in Greenville.
With the playwright as narrator, the program will feature Phippen’s students from Orono High School who were members of the original cast of the title play.
The students are Jon Bailey, who won a state acting award for the play; Evan James, Joelle Clingerman, Lauren Onsrud, and Savana Leveille.
“Standing Just Outside the Door” revolves around the coming out of a teenage student in a New York high school in 1966. The play had its premiere in 2003.
“The Police Know Everything” is an adaptation of Phippen’s popular book of Maine stories and was first produced in 1992. “The Straight and Crazy Doped-Up World” was first produced in 1973 in Syracuse, N.Y., during the “race riot” days.
The play is a compilation of student journal writings and was performed by his students in 1974 and again in 2003. All of the plays were written for Phippen’s students.
In the afterword to the book, Kent McKusick, founding artistic director of Northern Lights Repertory Theatre, writes: “Sanford Phippen is an observer and chronicler of life. The words, sounds and descriptions are uncanny in the fashion that they capture the spirit of independence and interdependence where the sea meets the woods and the mountains, where the locals meet the summer visitors, and where the students meet the teachers.”
Admission is $5. Signed copies of Phippen’s new book, as well as his other books, will be on sale. Call 695-3170 for information on the play presentation.

Colby College
WATERVILLE – Heather Lynn Meyers of Corinna, a member of the incoming Class of 2007 at Colby College, was selected as an L.L. Bean Scholar at Colby for 2003-2004.
A graduate of Nokomis High School, Meyers is the daughter of Thomas and Cynthia Meyers of Corinna. L.L. Bean Scholarships at Colby are presented annually to four Maine students who have both a strong academic record and the need for financial assistance.
Meyers, the salutatorian of her high school class, was a member of the National Honor Society. She has been involved in her high school’s show chorus and acted as manager of the jazz chorus her senior year. Meyers, who also plays trumpet, is a three-year member of the school band.
Colby’s L.L. Bean Scholarships were established in 1982 when the college received an endowment from the Freeport-based clothing company and sporting goods retailer.
University of Maine
ORONO – United States Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman has presented the department’s most prestigious award to Darrell Donahue of Old Town, a University of Maine engineer, for his role in a multi-state research project. Donahue’s research is leading to new technology that maintains quality in harvested wild blueberries.
Donahue, associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, is one of 26 researchers in 13 states working on the project, Technology and Principles for Assessing and Retaining Post-harvest Quality of Fruits and Vegetables. He focused on the use of near-infrared spectroscopy to assess fruit quality.
Associate Dean Steve Goodwin of the University of Massachusetts, the group’s administrative adviser, accepted the award on behalf of its members at a ceremony this summer at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington.
