DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Piscataquis County 4-H Leaders’ Association will expand the offerings for youths at this year’s Piscataquis Valley Fair.
The leaders, who received funds from the Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation and Oakhurst Dairy, hope the events offered Aug. 21-24 at the fairgrounds will draw the interest of more youths to the organization.
Among the expanded offerings this year will be sessions on how to care for rabbits, dogs and poultry, how to make healthful snacks, crafts, games, gardening and woodworking.
A poster contest on “The Goodness of Milk” is open to children ages 5-18. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded to winners in the following categories: ages 5-8; ages 9-14, and ages 15-18.
Any medium may be used such as pencils, oils, crayons, markers, and colored pencils for each 14-inch-by-22-inch entry. The posters must contain name, address, age and telephone number on the back of the poster. The posters must be submitted to the Piscataquis County Extension Office by Aug. 20.
Admission to the 116th Piscataquis Valley Fair sponsored by the Piscataquis Valley Fair Association is $5 for adults; $2 for children 5-10 years old, and free for children under 5. Senior citizens can visit the fair on Friday for $2.50. This year, visitors can purchase a $12 wristband that covers midway rides on all four days, but does not include the general admission fee.
Bob Nixon Comedy and Magic Show are on tap for Friday and Saturday and Bobby Bare and Debbie Meyers will perform in concert Saturday evening. Fireworks will be displayed on Thursday evening.
This year’s fair also will offer horse and pony pulling, an all-terrain vehicle pull, a horse show, pedal tractor pull, skillet throw, and dairy, goat, steer, sheep, poultry and lamb shows. In addition, there will be a frog jumping contest, a pig scramble, bingo games, a monster truck show and demolition derby, as well as a midway and refreshments.
