BANGOR – Jeff Byrd calls Nick Marshall the most versatile player on his Central Chesterfield Senior League team.
So when circumstances called for it, Byrd knew he could count on Marshall to make something happen.
Marshall, who has been a pinch-hitter and runner for this week’s World Series, did just that for the U.S. South region representative in Friday’s semifinal at Mansfield Stadium.
Marshall’s perfect execution of a suicide squeeze play, plus some late defensive heroics and a fine pitching effort, helped Central Chesterfield (Va.) to a 6-3 win over U.S. Central’s Urbandale Senior League of Iowa, and lifted the winners to the World Series championship game.
“We worked it out,” Byrd said. “I can’t tell you how, but he knew he had to get a bat on the ball and he did a great job under those circumstances.”
Central Chesterfield will meet West entry Hilo, Hawaii, which knocked off defending World Series champ Curacao 3-2 in the second semifinal of the afternoon. The teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m.
Central Chesterfield starter Shaun McEnhimer earned his second complete-game win of the World Series. This time he struck out 12, walked three and scattered eight hits.
Central Chesterfield had rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, so the runs that scored on Marshall’s squeeze play were just for insurance. But the play proved to be a big emotional boost for the Virginians.
Marshall stepped in with Matt Brown at third and baserunners at second and first. Brown took off on an 0-1 pitch, Marshall bunted and sprinted to first.
Urbandale pitcher Ryan Miles gathered in the ball and fired to first, but there was no one covering the base. Brown scored, and while the Urbandale defense tried to recover the ball near the right-field fence, the runners at second and third scored on the error. Marshall landed at third to cheers from the Central Chesterfield crown.
“We were hoping to get a run in any way we could, I guess,” Marshall said. “I saw that no one was covering first so I knew I would be safe there. I was just happy to be safe and get in some runs.”
Ryan Ullom and Lance Firebaugh each hit an RBI single in the fifth. Another run scored on an error.
“We regrouped and they came to play,” Byrd said. “It didn’t surprise me that we came back.”
Each team committed three errors, but Urbandale’s miscues led to three unearned runs.
“We made some fundamental mistakes, things that when you’re in a big game you have to be aware of,” Central manager Mark Johnson said. “Not having anyone at first [on the squeeze play] was the biggest thing. That changed the whole complexion late.”
Urbandale leadoff hitter Ryan Duede scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when he hit a groundball single to right, stole second, got to third on a fielder’s choice, and scored on an error.
