AUGUSTA – Preliminary figures show that state revenue for July exceeded budget projections by 6 percent, or more than $11.2 million, Gov. John Baldacci announced Friday. While much of the estimated surplus was linked to the timing of individual income tax collections, Baldacci said he was encouraged by the results for the first month of fiscal 2004. The individual income tax took in nearly $83.1 million, or $11.9 million more than the budgeted figure. Had that account been on target, the state’s overall revenue for the month would have been $700,000 short of the projected $181.4 million. The state’s biggest revenue producer – the sales and use tax – came in at $86.5 million, or more than $500,000 ahead of estimates. Baldacci said he was pleased that revenues appear to be on target and was cautiously optimistic about the state’s economic outlook. “These preliminary figures are encouraging,” he said. “They indicate that our revenue forecasts are on track. Although this is good news for Maine, we must continue to be prudent when it comes to the state’s budget.”
