JACKSON – A local man has been charged with theft by deception after allegedly charging tool and power equipment purchases to the accounts of area contractors.

Travis Kirk, 23, of the Valley Road was charged Thursday after a search of his home uncovered some of the items. The equipment was charged at EBS Building Supplies in Belfast earlier this summer.

Belfast Police Chief Allen Weaver said incriminating evidence obtained through the building supply store led authorities to Kirk.

“Basically, he was charging tools and equipment to other people’s accounts,” Weaver said. “It was valued at about $2,000, all told.”

Belfast police Officer Mike McFadden and Maine State Police Trooper Jason Richards executed the search warrant at Kirk’s home at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Correction: A shorter version ran in coastal edition.
