One held in stabbing in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS – One man was arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault Sunday night after a stabbing incident at Rainbow Trailer Park in St. Albans.

Deputy Matt Cunningham charged Michael P. Robinson, 41, of Newport, with stabbing Bruce Bennett Jr., 22. of St. Albans.

Cunningham said the incident began when Robinson and a companion, Frank Girrior, 35, went to the trailer park. Girrior went to the Roy and April Jones residence and demanded to speak to Roy Jones. He was met at the door by April Jones who refused him entry and shoved him off the steps, said the deputy.

When Robinson saw this, Cunningham said he attacked April Jones and hit her in the head. Jones’s neighbor, Bennett, witnessed the assault and went to Jones’s aid. A fist fight began between Robinson and Bennett. During the fight, Robinson pulled a knife and allegedly stabbed Bennett at least three times.

“He was severely, severely injured,” said Cunningham.

According to witnesses, Girrior pulled Robinson off Bennett and the pair fled the scene. A two-county bulletin was put out on the men and their vehicle.

Within a half hour, police were alerted that the two suspects were enroute to the hospital to seek medical attention. Cunningham, Deputy Dale Dunlap, Maine State Trooper Jarod Stedman and Pittsfield Police Officer Rodney Minoty converged at the hospital.

Cunningham said the situation became volatile when family members of all involved began to arrive at the hospital.

Robinson was treated for a cut on his leg and taken to Somerset County Jail.

Cunningham said the entire incident remains under investigation, but it is unlikely Girrior will be charged with any crime.
