SACO – After three rounds of play at the Biddeford-Saco Country Club – an old Donald Ross layout with multiple challenges and tricky greens, despite its short length – John Jamgochian of Connecticut was the only player under par as he led his team to the New England Junior Championship title Tuesday.

Jamgochian’s final round of 71 was the low score of the day and added to his first two rounds of 70, put him at 2-under-par for the tournament, nine shots ahead of the second-place individual finisher, Sam Chud of Massachusetts.

Joining Jamgochian on the winning team were Masayuki Kobayashi (76-73-75-224), K.J. Camera (70-75-80-225), Brent Paladino (76-77-72-225), Evan Beirne (73-76-79-228), Scott Cruff (78-85-75-238) and Kyle Morris (89-82-83-254). With the format as the best five of seven scores for each round, Connecticut totaled 1,108 points to beat out second place Massachusetts who finished at 1,124.

New Hampshire scored 1,137 to finish third ahead of defending champion Maine, which scored 1,143. Rhode Island and Vermont rounded out the team competition with scores of 1,168 and 1,172, respectively.

The tournament is conducted annually as one of three championships of the New England Golf Association. Next year’s junior championship will be hosted by New Hampshire at a club still to be determined.

Bangor golfer Jesse Speirs, who won the individual title last year, finished third on the Maine team with a 228 after shooting a final-round 79. Joe Baker had the best Maine score at 224 (final-round 72), followed by Will Robinson’s 228 (76).

Other Maine scores included Nicholas Boutin (231, 76), Toby Spector (241, 75), Bryce Fearon (241, 81), and Victor Linkovich (253, 82).
