SOUTH CHINA – Two people were killed and another injured in a multivehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer on Route 3 on Tuesday, police said.

Investigators said they believe a car was attempting to turn near the Palermo town line when it was hit from behind by a second vehicle, and the impact drove the car into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.

A man and a woman in the car were killed in the crash, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety. Their names were not released pending family notification.

The tractor-trailer came to rest in a nearby used-car lot, where it struck four cars, McCausland said.
