ORONO – Wednesday night saw a drastic turnaround for the slumping Bangor Lumberjacks as they unleashed a 14-hit attack on Quebec pitching en route to a 12-5 victory at Mahaney Diamond.
Mark Burke and Juan LeBron led Bangor’s attack. Burke went 3-for-4 with three doubles and six RBIs while LeBron had four hits in five at-bats, including a double, and scored four runs.
Burke, who was hitting .324 in his last 10 games, continued his offensive onslaught.
“For me, it’s just a matter of at-bats piling up. You know?” Burke said. “I feel a lot more comfortable now. I wasn’t playing every day and now with a chance to play every day here, I’m connecting on pitched I was fouling off earlier.”
The Lumberjacks improved to 17-19 and drew up to four games behind north division-leading Quebec, now 21-13 with 10 games left.
“I think we can turn it around,” said Burke. “You never know what can happen, but losing those first two in the series is disappointing.”
Roger Kalinowski hurled an inning and a third to notch the win – his first of the season – in relief.
Quebec cracked the scoreboard first for the third straight night, but Bangor had a quick answer. Three of Quebec’s first four batters singled, but the Capitales managed just one run – on Carlos Rodriguez’ single – before starter Kevin Pincavitch ended things with two straight flyouts. Bangor came back with three runs in the first.
Bangor’s outburst started with an infield double by Schuyler Doakes after Doakes’ grounder up the middle caused the two middle infielders to collide. Brad Hargreaves’ sacrifice bunt was mishandled by pitcher Jeff Harris and Doakes scored. Back-to-back singles by LeBron and Donnie Ross loaded the bases. Burke walked to force in a run and Lorenzo de la Cruz scored LeBron with a sacrifice fly.
Quebec scored a run in the second on back-to-back doubles by Galindo Gomez and Asdrubal Oropeza. The Capitales took the lead in the fourth (5-3) with three runs courtesy of back-to-back doubles by Osmani Garcia (two RBIs) and Rodriguez (one).
The Lumberjacks came back with a five-run fifth as Burke hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and one out, de la Cruz hit an RBI groundout, and Todd Brock blasted a two-run homer high off the left field foul pole.
Bangor added two more in the sixth with the benefit of a fielding miscue by left fielder John Ballon, who had the ball go off his glove after getting a late start on a liner to left center by Burke. Burke was credited with a two-run double.
