Woman, GM reach settlement in lawsuit

PORTLAND – A Naples woman who suffered a debilitating brain injury in an auto accident has settled her lawsuit against General Motors Corp., her lawyer said Wednesday.

Terms of the settlement were not released, but the agreement averts a retrial in the case that ended with a deadlocked jury in June.

Maria Allen claimed a defective seat and seat belt in her Chevrolet Lumina were to blame for the brain injury she suffered in the March 1999 crash.

Larry Coben, Allen’s attorney, said Wednesday that the parties agreed to a confidential settlement.
