CAMDEN – Camden Harbor will be host of the largest gathering of the Maine windjammer fleet during Windjammer Weekend Aug. 29-Sept. 1.
This year’s festivities will feature pirates, buried treasure and adventure on the high seas.
Maine Grand Opera will present “The Pirates of Penzance” at noon and 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, on the stage in Harbor Park.
Bayview Street Cinema in Camden will show the feature film “Pirates of the Caribbean” nightly at 7 and 9:30 during Windjammer Weekend.
Also, young “pirates in training” will be able to test themselves with a children’s treasure hunt beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30.
Other highlights of the weekend:
. On Friday, windjammers arrive between noon and 5 p.m.; the fireworks show is at dusk.
. On Saturday, popular events beginning at 9 a.m. will include the annual lobster crate races, children’s treasure hunt, and the build-a -oat contest.
Nautical workshops and demonstrations will begin at noon on both weekend days, featuring children’s activities such as a treasure sandbox and mural painting, as well as demonstrations by Atlantic Challenge, the U.S. Coast Guard, Maine Maritime Academy and the Maine Island Trail Association.
Special events on Saturday will include the second annual Harbor Hounds contest at 4:30 p.m., the traditional free showing of “Captains Courageous” at 3 p.m. at Bayview Street Cinema, and a launching of lighted Windjammer Wishes miniboats in the harbor at 9:30 p.m.
Activities on Sunday include sea stories for kids of all ages at 1 p.m. at the Camden Public Library, sea music and sea chantey workshops, the Ship to Shore fine art and crafts benefit auction for the Lincolnville school capital campaign from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Camden Public Library, the annual boat parade, and the grand finale Harbor Park concert, featuring traditional seafaring music by Deb Cowan, Jerry Brant and Kurt Steger and performing group Compass Rose.
