Maine woman dies in motorcycle crash

HAMPDEN – The National Folk Festival was marred by a traffic fatality Saturday afternoon when a Maine woman heading home from the festival died on Interstate 95 after losing control of her motorcycle.

Phyllis Lavimodiere, 51, of Detroit was killed after her motorcycle struck a rumble strip near the Hampden rest stop and hit a guardrail. Lavimodiere, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown off the motorcycle, which then bounced off the guardrail and struck a companion who had made the trip with Lavimodiere and her husband. Lavimodiere was pronounced dead at the scene.

David Brann, 53, also of Detroit, suffered a broken leg in the accident, according to Trooper David Yankowsky of the Maine State Police, Orono barracks, who investigated the accident. The motorcyclist was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he was in fair condition Sunday, according to a nursing supervisor.

The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Phyllis Lavimodiere, her husband, David Lavimodiere, and Brann all were driving separate motorcycles. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor, according to Yankowsky.

Lavimodiere had received her motorcycle permit in recent months. Driver inexperience may have contributed to the accident, Yankowsky said.

The trio was only about a mile and a half north of Exit 43, where they were planning to get off because of windy conditions, the state trooper said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
