BEDDINGTON – A local man drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming in Beddington Lake.
Charles Tobin, 49, was swimming with family and friends at about 3 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to Sgt. Patrick Devlin of the Maine Warden Service.
The group was swimming to a float near Tobin’s home, Devlin said. It was a windy day and the water was rough, and Tobin apparently had difficulties and went under.
People on the float attempted to rescue Tobin, but were unable to locate him, Devlin said.
Sgt. Dave Craven and Warden Wade Carter arrived at the scene and took a canoe onto the lake. They noticed Tobin’s white clothing, dove into the water without ccuba gear and recovered the body.
Lifesaving measures were performed at the scene but were not successful, Devlin said.
