Silent auction to benefit new Lincolnville school

You can help support the Lincolnville Central School Capital Campaign by attending the Ship to Shore Fine Art & Crafts Silent Auction beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Camden Public Library.

The auction will feature fine arts and crafts by area artists in one of Maine’s most famous seaside communities.

Amy Rollins, publicity chairwoman for the campaign, reports that through mid-August artwork and professional services had been donated by 52 individuals and organizations.

The work ranges from original paintings, prints and sculpture to furniture, pottery and glasswork.

Bids can be placed between 1 and 4:30 p.m.

However, bidding on some items will close at 3:30 p.m., and then every 15 minutes thereafter until closing. All items must be picked up and paid for by 5 p.m.

There is no charge to attend the auction.

Concerning the fund-raiser to benefit the new school, Rollins said, “our committee members have given many volunteer hours this spring and summer to make this event a major success.

“The funds we raise will go directly toward the construction of Lincolnville’s new school.”

The Lincolnville Central School Capital Campaign set a goal of raising $1 million to help build a new school for kindergarten through eighth-grade. The campaign recently passed the halfway mark in its effort.

From many sources, including the Muscular Dystrophy Association Maine Chapter, as well as individuals and families the program assists, we have received letters and requests to remind readers that the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon is coming up.

The annual Labor Day fund-raiser begins at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, and concludes 15 hours later, on Monday, Sept. 1.

It can be seen locally on WABI-TV Channel 5.

One family that has a child with one of the 40 neuromuscular diseases the association assists wrote that they “deeply value the help of MDA and its clinic at Eastern Maine Medical Center.”

The family also pointed out that the association “also continues to search for cures and treatments with an exciting research program,” as well as assisting with the cost of medical equipment and helping people cope with neuromuscular diseases through support groups.

You are encouraged to watch the telethon (you might just see someone you know manning the phones) and support the association by making a contribution to help the people the organization serves, especially in central, eastern and northern Maine.

From Kristie Miner, Reflections program director, comes an invitation to join the fun at the Country Fair beginning with lunch at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Westgate Manor, 750 Union St., Bangor.

Games are planned from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and, until 3 p.m., you can listen to the music of The Weekly Jammers.

The event helps celebrate National Adult Day Services Week, which is Sunday, Sept. 21, to Saturday Sept. 27.

Activities include a petting zoo, fishing pond, horseshoes, bobbing for apples, a pie-eating contest, a ring toss and a cow-milking contest.

In case of rain, the event will be at the same time and place the following day, Friday, Sept. 5.

Bill Rae and the staff at Manna Ministries in Bangor reports that more than 80 families have signed up to obtain school supplies for area children who are unable to purchase the items they need for the school year.

Manna needs 38 backpacks for children of all ages, 10 scientific calculators, book covers and dividers.

Donations, or financial contributions to help purchase these items, can be left from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Manna, 180 Center St., Bangor.
