Theater auditions

Penobscot Theatre Company will hold open auditions for “The Miracle Worker” and “A Christmas Carol” 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Penobscot Theatre, 183 Main St. Auditions are by appointment for all ages. Penobscot Theatre is particularly seeking an African American adult woman and an African American young boy and girl for roles in “The Miracle Worker.”

Actors should be prepared to present one memorized monologue no longer than one minute from a play, book, movie or poem, and 16 bars of an a cappella holiday song, if auditioning for “A Christmas Carol.” Actors are encouraged to complete their audition by bringing a current resume and photo to be kept on file.

Actors must schedule an audition appointment by calling Katey or Kristine at 947-6618. Those who have auditioned for PTC in the past need not attend, but are encouraged to contact by e-mail, collene@penobscottheatre.org, or by mail at 131 Main St., Bangor, ME 04401.

Concert open to public

Maine Public Radio will broadcast a live concert performed by Triology with Brad Terry 9-10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, on “Jazz with Rich Tozier.” The public is invited to attend the event at Maine Public Radio’s Bangor studio at 65 Texas Ave.

Triology is a young trio from Poland featuring Mateusz Kolakowski on piano, Michal Baranski on bass and Tomek Torres on drums.

American clarinetist Brad Terry is credited with discovering the group and bringing the musicians to the United States for a tour and recording session. The Polish musicians are known for playing far beyond their years, as on their album, “Presence,” which was recorded in 2000 when they were in their midteens. The group’s live appearance on “Jazz with Rich Tozier” is a return performance.

Fall Bulb Sale

The Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for its 2003 Fall Bulb Sale to benefit the district’s conservation programs. They offer tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, iris, lilies and other bulbs. Orders must be received no later than Sept. 13. Artist applications

Bangor Public Library’s art committee seeks artists and crafters to submit applications to exhibit in one of the library’s three exhibit areas during 2004. Applications should include five slides or photographs of the artist’s or crafter’s work.

The committee urges students and groups of artists to apply. Artists and crafters need not be professionals to apply. Application forms are available in the library lobby.

Application deadline is Oct. 15. Those chosen to exhibit will be notified by the end of November. For information or an application, call 947-8336.

Cascade Park Celebration

The annual Cascade Park Celebration will take place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the park on outer State Street.

The festivities will include food, pony rides, a climbing wall, a bounce tent, children’s games, rubber duck races and live entertainment.

The entertainment will be:

. 11 a.m., Maine-ly Music Barbershop Chorus.

. Noon, Queen City Big Band.

. 1 p.m. Twin City Cloggers.

A shuttle bus service to Cascade Park will be provided from Wing Park, 412 State St., where parking is free.

Child care training

The Penquis Community Action Resource Development Center is offering Caring for School-Age Youth, a 30-hour training program 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 4, 11 and 18, and Nov. 1 and 8, at Bangor Public Library.

The Maine Roads to Quality program covers the aspects of providing child care for 5- to 13-year-old children in a child care center or a family setting. The training session follows the standards and practices outlined for child care and early education in the eight-core knowledge areas.

The registration is $10. Current child care providers may apply to the Resource Development Center’s scholarship fund for reimbursement of the fee. Call 941-2840, Ext. 103, to register. Mail registration fees to Penquis CAP RDC, 120 Cleveland St., Bangor, ME 04401.

Opening child care business

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center is offering Getting Started in Family Child Care, a six-hour training session, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 1 and 8, at Bangor High School Adult Education, 885 Broadway.

The Maine Roads to Quality program will introduce the aspects of opening a family child care business in the home and covers state certification procedures, health and safety practices, working with families, child development, community and professional resources, and business and professional development.

Adoption, foster care

The Bangor office of the Department of Human Services will host a public informational meeting about adoption and foster care in Bangor on Sept. 15. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to end by 8:30 p.m. For location and signup, contact A Family For ME at (877) 505-0545.

Theater challenge grants

Penobscot Theatre Company has fulfilled the $30,000 challenge grant offered by the city of Bangor in June. The grant will be counted toward the Theatre’s Extraordinary Friends Campaign.

Three corporate contributions – $7,500 from Eaton Peabody, $5,000 from Bangor Savings Bank and $2,500 from Bangor Hydro-Electric Company – helped to meet the $30,000 goal. Bangor residents, businesses and service organizations, were eligible for the match with 226 making contributions to support the theatre between June 24 and Aug. 15.

According to Alicia Nichols, director of development, $222,000 has been raised to date by more than 650 contributors, a record number of donors in the theater’s history.

“We are elated with the extraordinary response by the Bangor community,” Nichols said. “It’s a wonderful tribute to the commitment and hard work of our campaign volunteers and board of directors.”

Penobscot Theatre’s next challenge is to fulfill a second $30,000 challenge grant offered by Christopher Hutchins. Nichols said $13,000 has been contributed so far.

New library hours

Basket of Hope

The third annual Basket of Hope fund-raiser to benefit the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research is set for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Brewer Auditorium. Activities include a Longaberger basket maker demonstration, a silent auction featuring past collector’s items, holiday products, door prizes, displays and presentations.

Tickets are $5 in advance, or $8 at the door. The event is sponsored by the Down East and Woven Treasures Branches of Independent Longberger Consultants. To learn more, call 942-5011.

City Council resolves

The Brewer City Council recently passed several resolves citing the accomplishments of Brewer residents.

Shirley “Slip” Corey was recognized for his induction into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame July 20. He was cited for his more than “30 years of coaching hundreds of Brewer boys in the Little League organization, a program he helped start in the 1950s.” In 1991, the Council named the Pendleton Street athletic complex in honor of Corey, his brother George, Bob DeBeck and Louis Morelli.

The council adopted a resolution of respect in honor of Mary Teresa “Maura” Millett, who died Aug. 2. The widow of F. Everett Millet, Mrs. Millett supported local charitable causes and was a member and past president of the Maine Democratic Women’s Club, an election official for South Brewer’s Ward 5 and member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.

The council congratulated Jennifer Johnson, a Brewer Middle School pupil, who was chosen Miss Maine Preteen recently. She will represent Maine and Brewer this fall in the Miss America Preteen Pageant in Orlando, Fla.

In other action, the Council accepted a donation of $1,750 from International Paper Co. to benefit the Brewer Public Library – $1,000 earmarked for the purchase of materials and supplies for the library’s six-week “Family Read Aloud” program, and $750 to purchase materials and supplies for the summer reading program.

Corinth

Youth lamb auction

Jeff Tilton of Tilton’s Livestock Auction in Corinth served as auctioneer for the annual youth market lamb auction Aug. 22 at Piscataquis Valley Fair in Dover-Foxcroft.

Tilton’s also purchased the Grand Champion Lamb raised by Colleen Schofield of Troy. A trophy was given by Cindy Crocker Story and family in memory of Bob Crocker.

Old Town

Blood drive

Georgia-Pacific, PACE Local and the Old Town Kiwanis will sponsor a blood drive 1-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Earland Sleight Training Center at the Georgia-Pacific mill. Donors will receive a T-shirt and a bag of Georgia-Pacific products. Donors also will have their names put on a donor’s board, which will be displayed at the center.
