Next week, the first in a variety of columns will appear in this space – our effort to help you get to know some of the people and organizations that make the Greater Bangor area so special.
One of our local treasures, of course, is the Bangor Public Library – among the most heavily used libraries, per capita, in the country.
The library’s director, Barbara McDade, will write the first installment of The Library Corner and, we hope, become a familiar face to those who read the column. Moreover, Barbara plans to ask other librarians in the area to participate.
Another regular offering will focus on the Bangor Humane Society. In her new position as executive director for the society, Becky Brimley will write the column.
Also, I will continue to write a “Weekly Thoughts” column each month, giving me the opportunity to let you know what’s new at The Weekly, or sharing information on how to submit items for Calendar and the like.
The fourth week of the month will be devoted to once-in-a-while columns by some of the nonprofit organizations that benefit the community.
In other pages of The Weekly, we will continue our regular features – Senior Beat by Carol Higgins on a weekly basis, and occasional columns offered by Community Health and Counseling Services, St. Joseph Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center and Acadia Hospital.
The point is not only to provide our readers with good, helpful information, but to help you feel connected to the community.
A recent survey showed that 92 percent of adults in The Weekly coverage area read it regularly or occasionally, and more than 70 percent read it three or four times a month.
And, more than 50,000 homes receive The Weekly either by mail or inserted into their Bangor Daily News.
We are pleased to be able to give this high level of visibility to worthy entities such as Bangor Public Library and the Bangor Humane Society. We hope that visibility will further their efforts to serve our community.
Roxanne Moore Saucier is editor of The Weekly. Her e-mail is weekly@bangordailynews.net.
