Boys & Girls Club Penobscot Nation Youth board member Pamela Colson Power said she is very excited about the Andrew Sockalexis Memorial 5-K Run-Walk, which begins with registration from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and starts at 10 a.m., Sunday Sept. 6, at the Penobscot Community Building on Indian Island.

What has “become an annual event that provides everyone the opportunity to support the Penobscot Nation Youth,” she said, also offers people “the chance to learn more about the Penobscot Nation Boys and Girls Club.

“The youth on Indian Island exude enthusiasm and pride in their achievements, and it is a pleasure to participant in and to witness this event,” she added.

Power welcomes everyone’s participation.

Andrew Sockalexis was the first runner from Maine to earn national and international fame, running the Boston Marathon in 1911 at age 19 and finishing 17th.

The following year, he finished second and was selected for the 1912 Olympics where he finished fourth.

Awards for the Sockalexis Run-Walk will go to overall winners and age group winners, with trophies presented to youngsters, and native crafts and mugs to adults.

The event includes T-shirts for the first 100 registrants and a raffle.

Applications are available at the Saucony Outlet, Penobscot Community Building and other local businesses.

The registration deadline for the 7th annual Log-A-Load for Maine Kids Golf Tournament is Friday, Aug. 29.

The event begins with registration at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at JATO Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

All proceeds benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in Maine.

The field is limited to 36 teams of four and the fee is $75 per person.

Tournament committee members Patrick Hackley, Pat Sirois, David Cole, John Bryant and Eric Dubay expect a full field and urge you to call today.

You are invited to join WABI-TV 5 sportscaster Tim Throckmorton during the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Family Funday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1, at Wal-Mart in Palmyra.

The event features live music by Nightmoves, a dunk tank, face painting, karate demonstrations, dance performances, a bounce house and much more.

Penobscot Theatre Company is holding open auditions for “The Miracle Worker” and “A Christmas Carol” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the theater on Main Street in Bangor.

The theatre company is particularly seeking an African-American adult woman and an African-American young boy and girl.

Those auditioning should prepare a monologue and short song.

The nonprofit Charles O. Howard Memorial Foundation is raising funds to erect a monument in honor of the young, gay man who, because of his sexual orientation, drowned when three juveniles threw him from a Bangor bridge in 1984.

The kickoff event for the campaign to raise between $35,000 and $40,000 is a Pampered Chef Party at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in the vestry of Hammond Street Congregational Church.

However, reservations for the party must be made by Sunday, Sept. 7.
