Forest Service warns of high fire danger

AUGUSTA – Maine Forest Service rangers are asking the public to be extra careful with fire over the holiday weekend as fire danger has risen to high in many parts of the state.

The forest service maintains 33 weather stations that provide fire-weather data. Of particular importance is the “build-up index,” which measures the cumulative precipitation and drying effect on vegetation. When the index reaches 50, fires occur more readily. As of Thursday, nearly half the weather stations reported build-up ratings of 50 or higher.

To date, approximately 550 wildfires have been reported in Maine this year, with 850 acres burned. These figures compare to 559 fires and 610 acres as of the same date last year. Property owners are asked to check with any forest ranger before building an open fire. Fire danger in northern Maine remains moderate.
