A recent letter backing St. John’s Catholic Church and Bishop Joseph Gerry kowtowing to pro-abortion “Catholic” politicians by letting them use church facilities to help their re-election campaigns is just plain wrong.

The Vatican’s doctrinal note makes very clear the consistent Catholic Church teaching that you can’t be Catholic and pro-abortion. It also strongly urges bishops to counsel these errant Catholic politicians whose salvation is at stake.

The doctrinal note explains that “John Paul II, continuing the constant teaching of the Catholic Church, has repeated many times that those who are directly involved in lawmaking bodies have a ‘grave and clear obligation to oppose’ any law that attacks human life. For these politicians, as for every Catholic, it is impossible to promote such laws or to vote for them.”

Permitting the use of church facilities to pro-abortion “Catholic” politicians gives tacit approval to their actions and undermines Catholic Church teaching about this abominable crime.
